The best still rosé wines

Domaine St Felix Cuvée Pierre Martin 2021, Languedoc-Roussillon, France 12.5%

A pale copper-pink, this grenache-cinsault blend has a more citrus than red berry appeal, with oranges and dried orange peel at its heart and a peachy note. On the finish it’s dry and slightly salty – good with pork pâtés or rillettes. Available from Lea and Sandeman (£9.50 or £8.95 each for a 12 bottle case).

Aldi Specially Selected Côteaux de Beziers 2021, Chassaux et Fils, France 12.5%

One of the best buys of the whole summer, a southwest French rosé that’s bursting with juicy cherries and red apple, finishing dry. It’s softer and easier than some more expensive Provence pinks. A bargain. Available from Aldi (£5.99).

Mirabeau X Rosé 2021, Coteaux d’Aix-en-Provence, France 12.5%

Mirabeau’s pinks just get better and better – this one has a lovely creaminess with freshly picked strawberries. It’s dry but has wonderful depth of flavour; very classy. Chill it for prawns or langoustines. Available from The Co-op (£12).

The best sparkling rosé wines

Marks & Spencer Prestige Cava Rosé Brut NV, Spain 12%

Bright and lively Spanish fizz with the tang of red cherry drops and some red apple flavour too. It’s dry but not too dry, and would be a fine match for barbecued prawns and grilled peppers. Available from Marks & Spencer (£10).

Waitrose Rosé Champagne NV, France 12.5%
This bright, cerise-tinted champagne is made from 100% pinot noir and has relatively rich flavours of cranberry and fresh rhubarb with a hint of vanilla. It will stand up to cold meats and the half-bottle is perfect to take along on a picnic for two… Available from Waitrose (£28.99 for 37.5cl, down to £22.99 from 29 June to 12 July).

Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference Prosecco Rosé Brut 2021, Italy 11.5%

A decidedly superior pink prosecco from one year, with a good balance between slight sweetness and fresh, tangy red berries. Gorgeously frothy and vivacious party pop. Available from Sainsbury’s (£10).

The best non-alcoholic options

New London Light Midnight Sun Non-Alcoholic Aperitif, Devon, England 0%

The complex and natural flavours created by the Salcombe Distilling Company are perfect here. There are savoury notes of pine and kelp, together with fruity ones of elderberries and sea buckthorn. It’s spenny, but since it’s best topped up one part to three parts tonic, a little goes a long way. Available from Amazon (£27.50 for 70cl).
